Big Bang: The Miracle of the Quran

Scientists and cosmologists use the ‘Big Bang’ theory to explain how the universe was formed.

Although some reject this theory, the ‘Big Bang’ is widely accepted based on observational evidence and experiments gathered by scientists over several decades.

The Quran contains a verse related to the origin of the universe:

Surah Al-Anbya’ 21:30

And do not the disbelievers think and believe that the heavens and the earth were originally joined together (as one thing), then We separated them?

To date, the Big Bang theory is the most widely accepted explanation for how the universe began. It says that the universe as we know it began as a single point that was extremely hot and dense. Then, at one point, there was a huge explosion called the Big Bang, which then continued to expand at a measurable rate.

The universe is not only expanding, but it is expanding faster than the speed of light. This means that all galaxies and planets in space are moving away and further away as time progresses. This theory was confirmed by Edwin Hubble’s observation that all celestial objects are moving away from each other using recordings from the Hubble Telescope in 1920 where he observed that there is a relationship between the distance of galaxies from Earth and their red-shift. This condition is called Inflation.

Adh-Dhariyat 51:47

And the heaven We built with power (Ours) and indeed We have expanded it.

This verse is another piece of evidence that shows that Allah is the one who created this universe. As-Sheikh Said Hawa in Al-Asas fi al-Tafsir, as quoted by the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department in his blog, said, “The meaning of this verse is that Allah will make this sky in a state of continuous expansion or Allah will make it vast.”

If this process were reversed, then the expansion of the galaxy would get closer and closer until they met at a point called a singularity. So practically, the Earth we live in actually merged with other celestial objects throughout the galaxy in the early stages of the Big Bang explosion!

Quran 21:30

And do not the disbelievers think and believe that the heavens and the earth were originally joined together (as one thing), then We separated them?

The clear similarity between the verses of the Quran and the ‘Big Bang’ is amazing! How can a book revealed in the Arabian desert more than 1400 years ago contain such a scientifically comparable coincidence? Yet if we examine the results of other writings, whether from the holy books of other religions or the study of stars that existed at that time, there will be no statement equivalent to this revelation of Allah.

It is impossible that all of this is a coincidence except by the permission of Allah who has revealed His knowledge to our noble Messenger, Prophet Muhammad SAW. However, we must also be reminded not to be too obsessed with any theory from those who do not believe in God. This is because at the time I wrote it, there was a heated debate about the multiverse theory and so on.

Indeed, only Allah is the owner of all knowledge and understanding.
