Belief in qada’ and qadar is one of the six pillars of faith. It means believing that everything that happens in this world has been determined by Allah SWT, whether it is related to good or bad. This belief implies that Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise, and All-Powerful in all matters.

Qada’ linguistically means decision or decree. In the context of Islamic teachings, it refers to Allah’s determination that has been set since eternity. [1]

Qadar means measurement or determination. It refers to the implementation or manifestation of Allah’s decree in the tangible world.

Belief in qada’ and qadar does not mean one should resign without effort. Instead, Islam teaches a balance between tawakkul (reliance on Allah) and ikhtiar (personal effort). For example, a person who wants to succeed in their studies must study diligently while relying on Allah. Allah SWT also says in Surah Ar-Ra’d, verse 11: “Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” This verse highlights that the opportunity to change one’s position or situation is always open. Individual effort and actions play a significant role in achieving better outcomes, in line with the will of Allah, who is Most Just and Most Wise.

  1. Provides inner peace: This belief helps a person accept life’s trials with an open heart, understanding that every trial is a decree of Allah that contains wisdom.
  2. Prevents arrogance and despair: Those who believe in qada’ and qadar realize that success and failure all come from Allah.
  3. Strengthens reliance on Allah: Understanding that Allah determines everything encourages a person to draw closer to Him.

Belief in qada’ and qadar is a fundamental aspect of a Muslim’s faith. It not only strengthens confidence in Allah’s power but also nurtures the soul to be patient, grateful, and persistent in life. This belief teaches that everything that happens is part of Allah’s perfect plan, filled with wisdom.
